Yoga and Meditation
Scientists are able to prove that yoga and meditation can help us stay away from stress and disease. Yoga can increase mental energy and help a patient keep the negative feelings in check and develop positive feelings. Through our ancient spiritual and ancient traditions many forms of meditation have evolved. Most of these yoga and meditation techniques aim to train you in bringing attention and awareness, thereby keeping the thoughts under control. Many studies have shown that regular yoga and meditation can relieve pain, stress and anxiety. Denninger from Harvard Medical School has done many studies using neuro-imaging and genomics technology to measure the physiological changes from yoga and meditation. He says that when we meditate, the effect is on the whole body and the brain.
This study by Denninger might persuade a lot of doctors to try out alternate treatments for various modern ailments. Stress induced conditions like hypertension, infertility, depression and aging account to around 60 to 90 percent of doctors visits in the US according to a study by Benson-Henry Institute. These can be tackled effectively with the introduction of yoga and meditation, to increase productivity and reduce absenteeism in companies.
Denninger, a psychiatrist, was attracted towards mind-body medicine and studied the prevention of depression induced by stress. He is of the opinion that while pharmaceutical treatment is essential, yoga and meditation are useful additions to the medical arsenal.
Nobel Prize winner Elizabeth Blackburn published her findings from a study, stating that 12 minutes of daily yoga and meditation for eight weeks can increase the telomerase activity by 43 percent. This suggests an improvement in the process of stress induced aging. Research from the US suggests that mind and body techniques like yoga and meditation put the body in a state of deep rest, which can also be known as the relaxation response. This response is capable of changing the way genes behave in response to stress. This is characterized by the reduction in oxygen intake and increase in the exhalation of nitric oxide, which can lower psychological distress.
